The Mobility Innovation Tour back on track to talk about operational challenges in managing large electric bus fleets. The electric bus is now a well-established reality, with market shares growing steadily and rapidly: in the first half of 2024, e-buses reached 16 percent of sales in Europe, and in Italy the share of new battery-powered city buses has well exceeded 30 percent. In several cities in Italy, the numerical size of e-buses has reached the connotations of “fleets ,” and the time is therefore ripe for a comparison on the strategies adopted and the returns on experience, in a continuous technological evolution that concerns both the vehicle and the facilities for recharging and overall energy management, in a “systemic” perspective that increasingly depicts their added value right from the design stages. Turin and Genoa, together with Bergamo, represent for the sector national excellences with fleets of electric buses now substantial, large planned investments, and an experience gained over the years on rather heterogeneous operating contexts.
