He served as Special Envoy for Libya. He held four-year assignments abroad\, notably in Santiago de Chile\, Athens\, Brussels (European Union)\, Washington\, and in Algiers as Ambassador of Italy (2016-2020). From 2011 to 2016 he served as Secretary General of the European University Institute in Florence. He was recently appointed President of the think-tank Reset – Dialogues on Civilizations.     \nFor many years he combined diplomatic service with intensive academic and research work on the theory and practice of international relations. Among his published volumes:   The Preventive State. Securitarian Democracy and Democratic Security\, 2010; Global Religions and International Relations.
