SUMMARY:INNOVATIVE MANAGEMENT OF BRIDGE SAFETY: STRUCTURAL AND VEHICLE TRAFFIC RISK - University of Brescia
DESCRIPTION:As part of the MOST SPOKE 7 “CCAM and Smart Infrastructure\,” on September 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with light lunch\, theUniversity of Brescia is organizing the Workshop INNOVATIVE MANAGEMENT OF BRIDGE SAFETY: STRUCTURAL AND VEHICLE TRAFFIC RISK\, at the Aula Magna of Economics\, Via San Faustino 74\, Brescia. \nBridges are among the most vulnerable elements of road networks\, as they are subject to stresses of various kinds that can cause damage that may require their closure or\, in the worst case\, cause their collapse. The inability of a bridge has a major impact on mobility\, increasing travel times\, congesting traffic and hindering the transport of goods. Among the main risk factors\, heavy traffic and structural deterioration pose a growing threat to bridge safety\, especially in settings with dated infrastructure and vehicular loads that often exceed design limits.   \nThe workshop will open with a framing of the infrastructure management activities conducted at the national level in MOST’s Spoke7 “CCAM and Smart Infrastructure\,” and then focus on the activities of the UniBS Working Group\, with the aim of developing an innovative method for real-time assessment and management of heavy traffic risk on bridges. The project integrates multidisciplinary expertise from transportation\, structural\, network and telecommunications engineering\, as well as statistical analysis and operations research tools.  \nThe monitoring system involves the use of Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) devices to measure the load of passing vehicles and sensors to analyze the structural response. A pilot bridge\, located along Brescia’s Tangenziale Sud\, one of the roads with the most heavy traffic in Italy\, has been instrumented to collect data useful for calibrating probabilistic risk models.\nThe proposed approach allows not only for real-time estimation of the risk induced by heavy traffic\, but also for simulation of heavy vehicle detour actions prior to transit over the monitored bridge. Algorithms to optimize alternative routes and maintenance strategies aimed at risk reduction for reinforced and prestressed concrete bridges are also provided.\nThe workshop will provide an opportunity for experts in the field to discuss innovative solutions for road infrastructure safety and management.   \nParticipation in the seminar is free of charge.
